The Future of Healthcare: Digital Transformation in Tasmania and Kenya

Healthcare is changing fast, and digital technology is leading the way. The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) in Tasmania recently launched a new digital system called the Patient Alerts Management Solution (PAMS). This system replaces traditional paper records with real-time digital updates, helping doctors and nurses access patient information quickly and accurately. Since its launch in November 2024, the number of recorded medical alerts and allergies has increased from 580 to 990 per week. This means better patient safety and less paperwork for healthcare workers. The move is part of Tasmania’s $470 million Digital Health Transformation program, which aims to modernize hospitals and improve healthcare services.

Kenya’s Digital Health Journey

Kenya is also embracing digital transformation in healthcare as part of its goal to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030. In early 2025, the Kenyan government sped up efforts to digitize healthcare services, making hospitals more efficient and improving access to quality medical care. A new law, the Digital Health Act, was introduced to support the use of technology in healthcare. This law ensures that hospitals can share patient data safely, making diagnosis and treatment more effective.

One of Kenya’s biggest health programs, Taifa Care, is helping citizens get affordable healthcare. This program is a step toward UHC and is focused on using digital tools to manage patient records, insurance claims, and medical supply tracking.

How Does This Compare to the U.S. Healthcare System?

In the United States, Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), was introduced in 2010 to help more people get health insurance. While Obamacare improved access to healthcare, it did not focus much on digital transformation like Tasmania and Kenya. However, in recent years, some hospitals in the U.S. have adopted digital record-keeping and telemedicine, showing a growing shift toward digital healthcare.

Why Digital Transformation Matters in Schools and Government Offices

Digital transformation is not just important in hospitals—it’s needed in schools and government offices too. In education, digital tools make learning easier and more accessible. Schools that use e-learning platforms, smart classrooms, and digital records can provide better education to students. Online learning allows students in remote areas to access the same quality of education as those in cities.

Government institutions also benefit from digital transformation. Digital systems in government offices make services faster, reduce paperwork, and help fight corruption. For example, in Kenya, digitizing national ID registration, land records, and tax services has made public services more efficient. Citizens no longer have to spend long hours in offices filling out paperwork when they can access services online.

Tasmania and Kenya’s push for digital healthcare shows how technology can improve lives. Digital transformation in hospitals ensures better patient care, while its use in schools and government offices creates a more efficient and modern society. Countries that invest in digital solutions will have better healthcare, education, and public services—leading to a brighter future for everyone.
